Athlete Class of 2008

Melissa Fitz was born and raised in Minneapolis. She was a multi-sport athlete, but her passion was basketball. She was a varsity starter all four years and captain in two of those. During her years at Southwest, the team didn't always make it far in the playoff picture, but the conference games were always a battle.

Melissa averaged 19 points per game while shooting 61% from behind the arc as a senior and 18 points per game while shooting 41% from three as a junior. Melissa was named Honorable Mention All-State her senior year and All- Conference her junior and senior years. She had recorded 4 different 30-point performances during her junior year. She was also named Minneapolis Conference Player of the Year her junior year. In 2004, Melissa was named State AAU Player of the Year.

Melissa is the second all-time leading scorer in Southwest High School history, boys or girls, with a total of 1565 points.

She went on to star at University of Upper Iowa and Bellarmine University, while averaging 9 points per game, and shooting 41% for 3's.

Melissa now resides in the Phoenix area.
